Black Tailed Godwit (Limosa limosa)
The Black-tailed Godwit (Limosa limosa) is a large, elegant wader bird known for its long, straight bill and distinctive black-and-white tail pattern. Native to wetlands, grasslands, and coastal areas of Europe and Asia, this migratory species undertakes long journeys to Africa and southern Asia during the winter months. With striking reddish-brown plumage in breeding season and a more subdued gray-brown in winter, Black-tailed Godwits are easily recognizable in flight by their striking white wingbars. They feed primarily on invertebrates, probing the mud with their sensitive bills. Unfortunately, habitat loss and changes in agricultural practices have led to population declines, placing the species on conservation watch lists.
