The improvements I have made since I first started bird photography in 2022 until today are nothing short of outstanding. The difference and improvement are very noticeable in my work, composition, approach, angle of shooting, and proximity to the target. I have moved from photographing birds to much harder targets such as foxes, martens, and badgers.
This improvement came from changes on many levels, including equipment upgrades, but more importantly, from applying hunting skills and techniques for a different purpose. Scouting the area, choosing the best location to shoot, adapting camouflage techniques, ensuring I am against the wind, studying my target carefully, using range finders, binoculars, thermal scopes, game callers, baits and executing these plans all contribute to my success.
Still, the success rate for stunning photos is around 40%. I don’t expect every trip to lead to perfect photos; from every five trips, only two of them will be successful. The percentage will vary depending on the target and the time of year.
The process I have developed gets me incredibly close to the target. For example, I have been centimeters away from ibex and squirrels and four meters away from owls, hyrax, and badgers. This all happens in Lebanon, where wildlife is very sensitive and shy from humans due to the historical daily harm that a nation with uncontrolled and unregulated hunting imposes on wildlife existence and well-being. These practices have led to the extinction and dangerous endangerment of many species to this day.
