Black-crowned Night Heron
The Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) is a medium-sized heron, easily recognized by its distinctive black cap and back, contrasting with its gray wings and white underparts. These herons are mostly nocturnal, preferring to hunt at dusk or during the night, feeding on fish, amphibians, and invertebrates. During the day, they often roost in trees or dense vegetation near water. The species is found in wetlands, rivers, lakes, and coastal regions around the world, including Lebanon, where it is a common sight. Despite their somewhat stocky build and short legs, Black-crowned Night Herons are agile and efficient hunters.
