Western Reef Heron (Egretta gularis)
The Western Reef Heron (Egretta gularis) is a medium-sized heron commonly found in coastal regions of the Middle East, including the UAE. It has two color morphs—either entirely white or dark slate-gray—with both morphs featuring long legs and a slender, sharp bill. This species is often seen in shallow waters, mudflats, and mangroves, where it forages for fish, crustaceans, and small invertebrates. The Western Reef Heron is highly adaptable and is a frequent resident of wetlands and coastal areas throughout the region.
